The ab initio calculations are good at calculating
relative energies, and are not
good at calculating absolute energies. By calculating the energy of
a reaction we can get the calculated energy
of a species relative to the other
species in the reaction. This causes a cancellation of the systematic errors in the ab initio calculation.
